When I began using my drug of choice, I was using it to relieve stress and feel better emotionally. And it did do that...the problem of using the drug was the problem. I began to live for the ability to be able to buy the drug and use it everyday. It got to where my using the drug daily was the only way I could feel right. I looked forward to getting up everyday because I knew I'd use the drug again. I became a functioning addict. I would often wonder...is this how I'm gonna be for the rest of my life? That scared me. I knew that I had to find a way to feel just as good without the use of my drug of choice. I knew this would only lead to abuse, jail or death. That wasn't a good trade at all. Although it took me about 1.5 years to get over using the drug, with many relapses, and in and out of detox.
Finally for me, I chose a geographical change and was lucky enough to have that opportunity at the right time in my life. So I went for it. It's now been over 4 years clean, no relapses, and my life is better for me emotionally than it has ever been. It took alot to stay away from my drug of choice, and luckily I had the support of my spouse in the process. I took myself out of the environment where it was easy to obtain drugs, and it helped me greatly.
A person also has to find something that matters to them, for them, in their own life, something that helps us to cope or feel better about ourselves. This also helps in the recovery process. But you must stay committed to getting and staying clean. And most important...stay away from others who are using because that's just going to make it worse. You have to fight to get your life back. But it CAN be done! :) Enjoy your day.

What an interesting set of articles - and easy to follow and understand. I just have one question - I always thought of the word narcotics being a generic description including all drugs. In your article, it seems to be one of a type/family of drug. If so, which are specific drugs included in the group of narcotics? Thank you

Dear Mr Gorski

Thank you for those excellent articles -thank you.
Articles like yours make History.
Thank you for your work . For accuracy, excellent framework (structure).
And for teaching me how a good work on an article should be done.
But first of all THANK YOU for making as simple as possible something what can be written in a"scientific way". It is hard work to write an article which can be understood only by scientifist. But to write the way which can be understood by addicted people - well, that is the best thing in this world.
As to save someones life -well it is the best reward...And that is excactly, what you do by being here.
Thank you

To Steven Gorski,
In my second year of recovery, a member gave me a book you wrote regarding 'Relapse Prevention' and it helped me see that I was suffering from codependant relapse signs. I was still in relationship with a using addict so, with the information you provided, I signed up for Family Treatment and thereafter got an NA sponsor that has worked 12 steps according to Pia Melody (that was used as a model in codependant treatment in the USA).
I gave that relationship to God and now I am now clean for almost 15 years. Last week I passed on your book on to a newcomer waiting to get into Jean Tweed woman's treatment in Toronto. Thank you so much for the insight you have provided.

Dear Mr Gorski I am so happy you are the same opinion as I am. Please take a look:
'...But in order to recover I had to know this Program.
I always say - in order to recover one has to know what from to recover and how to do it..."

I said this one million times - on my polish websites and on Canadian forum on line.
And I am living proof of that - with my own recovery from comp.gambling.
You see - while translating GA Program, as it was not know in 2006 in Poland I had to think carefully -what GA has in mind - I spent uncountless hours searching internet for informations on comp.gambling.

It is hard to believe what was happening in my brain - simple language and explanations - it was what I needed the most - Women Helping Women and Marilyn Lancelot saved my life

as and I am fascinated by logic and simplicity of GA Program– it is so simple, but “no pain, no gain”.
